The LuxWX Comfort Index

One number that answers the only question that matters: Should I go outside?

72°F and Sunny... Perfect?

Not if it's 95% humidity with mosquitoes swarming. Or a thunderstorm is rolling in. Or the UV index is melting your face off. Temperature alone doesn't answer the only question that matters: should I go outside?

One Number. One Decision.

The LuxWX Comfort Index combines temperature, humidity, dewpoint, wind, UV, precipitation, and lightning into a single 0-10 score. No more checking six different metrics. One glance tells you everything. When it hits 8+? That's a Luxardo Day.

The LuxWX Comfort Scale

Every score comes with a vibe. Because weather should be fun.

9-10

Luxardo Day!

Get outside right now. This is what you live for. Drop everything. The weather is perfect.

7.5-9

Gorgeous

Beautiful day. Highly recommended for outdoor activities. You'll be happy out there.

6-7.5

Lovely

Nice out. Pleasant conditions for most activities. A good day to be outside.

4.5-6

Meh

It's fine. Could be better, could be worse. You won't regret going out, but it's not special.

3-4.5

Cozy Inside

Netflix weather. Blankets recommended. Perfect excuse to stay home with hot cocoa.

1.5-3

Hard Pass

Stay in unless you have to go out. Reschedule that picnic. The weather isn't cooperating.

0-1.5

Nope

Seriously, don't go out there. Extreme conditions. Stay safe indoors.

Seven Factors. One Score.

Each factor is weighted and combined to give you the complete picture of outdoor comfort.

Factor 1

Temperature

The foundation of outdoor comfort. We use 70°F as the "Goldilocks" temperature — not too hot, not too cold. The further you get from this sweet spot, the lower your score.

65-75°F

50-90°F

Factor 2

Dewpoint

The real muggy indicator. Meteorologists know: dewpoint tells you the actual moisture feel better than relative humidity. A 50% RH at 86°F is way worse than 50% at 59°F — dewpoint captures this.

<55°FCrisp & comfortable
60-65°FGetting muggy
65-70°FOppressive
>70°FTropical misery
Factor 3

Wind

Context matters! A light breeze on a warm day is a bonus — that perfect cooling effect. But the same wind in winter? Brutal wind chill. We factor in temperature to make wind work for or against the score.

Light breeze + warm+8% bonus!
Dead calm + hotStifling penalty
Strong wind + coldMajor penalty
Factor 4

UV Index

High UV means you're getting cooked. Even on a beautiful day, extreme UV reduces outdoor comfort because you need to seek shade, slather on sunscreen, and limit exposure time.

Factor 5

Feels-Like Delta

When there's a big gap between actual temperature and "feels like" temperature, conditions are more extreme than they appear. A big difference means the weather is working against you.

Example: It's 77°F but feels like 95°F due to humidity — that 18°F delta signals challenging conditions that reduce your comfort score.

Factor 6

Precipitation

Rain kills outdoor plans. Even a light drizzle makes everything less pleasant. Heavy rain? You're getting soaked. Hail? That actually hurts. We factor in both intensity and type.

DrizzleSlight penalty
Light rainYou need an umbrella
Heavy rainStay inside
HailOuch! Major penalty
Factor 7

Lightning

Lightning doesn't care how nice the temperature is. When there are strikes nearby, outdoor comfort drops to "get inside now" territory. We use distance and strike count to assess the danger.

<3 kmDANGER - get inside!
3-8 kmSeek shelter
8-15 kmBe cautious
>25 kmMinimal concern

The Math (Simplified)

Each factor produces a score or multiplier. We use a multiplicative approach — meaning one terrible factor drags the whole score down. This is intentional: you can't have a "Luxardo Day" if it's pouring rain, even if the temperature is perfect.

// The Formula
comfort = temp_score × moisture × wind × uv × delta × precip × lightning
// Where each factor is 0.0 to 1.0 (or slightly above for bonuses)
// Final result clamped to 0-10 scale

Perfect 10 Requires:

  • • 65-75°F temperature
  • • Dewpoint under 55°F
  • • Light breeze (bonus!)
  • • Low UV index
  • • No precipitation
  • • No lightning

Instant Score Killers:

  • • Heavy rain (-60% or more)
  • • Lightning under 3km (-80%)
  • • Extreme temps (-70%+)
  • • Tropical dewpoint (-45%+)
  • • Hail (-65%)
