Mobile App
Using weather alerts on the LuxWX iOS app.
Signing In
LuxWX offers three ways to sign in:
- Apple Sign In — Tap "Sign in with Apple" and follow the system prompt. No password needed.
- Google Sign In — Tap "Sign in with Google" and select your account.
- Email (Magic Link) — Enter your email and check your inbox. Tap the link within 15 minutes to sign in. Check spam if you don't see it.
Enable Notifications
After your first sign-in, LuxWX will ask to enable push notifications. We strongly recommend tapping "Enable Notifications" — this is how you receive real-time weather alerts.
If you skip this, you can enable them later from Settings → Notifications in the app.
Your Alert Feed
The Alerts tab is your main screen — a chronological feed of all weather alerts from your stations and the National Weather Service.
Filtering your feed
Two ways to narrow what you see:
- Feed filter — Choose Active (unresolved only), Recent (last 7 days), or All (complete history)
- Severity filter — Tap the filter icon (top right) to show only Critical, Warning, or Info alerts
Reading alert rows
Custom alerts show a colored dot on the left (red = critical, amber = warning, blue = info). Filled dot = active, outlined = resolved. The alert name, time, station, and severity are shown on two lines. If you have only one station, the station name is hidden.
NWS alerts show a shield icon colored by severity. The event name (e.g., "Severe Thunderstorm Warning"), affected areas, and "NWS" label are displayed.
Alert detail view
Tap any alert to see full details:
- Status — Active or resolved
- Trigger vs. Threshold — The actual value that triggered the alert alongside your threshold. Shown in your alert's severity color.
- Timeline — When triggered, when resolved, how long it lasted
- Notification status — Whether a push was sent and when
For NWS alerts, you'll also see the full NWS description, safety instructions (highlighted), affected zones, and a link to weather.gov.
Managing Alerts Per Station
The Watchlist shows your stations and lets you configure alert rules. If you have one station, it opens directly. Multiple stations show a list — tap one to configure it.
Station detail page
Each station page has three areas:
- Alerts toggle — Master switch to enable/disable all alerts for this station
- Alert configurations — Organized by category (Temperature, Wind, etc.). Each shows whether it's active, the threshold, and notification channel icons.
- Station details — Expandable section with map, coordinates, elevation, timezone, and NWS coverage info
Creating an alert
- Expand a category (e.g., Temperature)
- Find the alert type and tap Add
- Set your threshold, notification channels, cooldown, and optional quiet hours
- Tap Save
Editing an alert
Tap any configured alert to expand its inline editor. Change the threshold, toggle channels, or adjust timing. Tap Save.
Pausing and resuming
Swipe right on any configured alert to reveal Pause or Resume. Paused alerts appear dimmed and won't trigger until resumed. Your configuration is preserved.
Deleting an alert
Swipe left and tap Delete, or expand the editor and tap the trash icon. Deletion is immediate.
When do I get a notification?
Whenever an alert you've configured is triggered (e.g., temperature crosses your threshold) or when a new NWS alert is issued for your station's area.
What happens when I tap a notification?
LuxWX opens and takes you directly to that alert's detail page.
What does the badge count mean?
The number on the app icon shows unread active alerts. It resets when you open the app.
App open vs. background vs. closed
- App open — Banner at the top of the screen
- Background or closed — Standard iOS notification in your notification center and lock screen
Changing your unit system
Go to Settings → Account and choose Imperial (°F, mph, inches) or Metric (°C, km/h, mm). This is synced across all of LuxWX — alert thresholds display in your chosen units.
Switching tenants
If you belong to multiple organizations, tap Settings → Switch Tenant to change which organization's stations and alerts you're viewing. Data refreshes automatically.
Checking notification status
Go to Settings → Notifications to see your iOS permission status and device registration. If permission shows "Denied," tap "Open Settings" to enable notifications for LuxWX in iOS Settings.
What happens when I lose internet?
A yellow banner appears: "No Internet Connection." The app shows previously loaded data but can't refresh or receive new alerts. The banner disappears and data refreshes when connectivity returns.
How do I refresh data?
Pull down on any main screen (Alerts feed or Watchlist) to refresh.
